The quality of public education in New Orleans has steadily increased over the past decade, based in large part on the array of options now available to families and the freedom for schools to shape their own educational programs. That improvement, as demonstrated by the significant rise in student achievement and parental satisfaction, is noteworthy – but there is still much progress to be made. The Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) must continue to increase the number of high quality school options for students and, equally important, ensure that those options are accessible for families citywide. It must also hold all schools accountable, without exception, to high performance standards while continuing to allow for the individual school autonomy that has proven effective in recent years.

To that end, Forward New Orleans for Public Schools (FNOPS) sought a pledge from each School Board candidate to implement the action items associated with the issues set forth below. The candidates’ responses will be published prior to the election. We will hold your School Board members accountable by monitoring their performance and periodically reporting on their progress toward achieving these action items during their four-year term.

We ask School Board members to commit to the following:

ISSUE ONE
PROMOTE HIGH-QUALITY, HIGH-PEFORMING PUBLIC SCHOOLS

ISSUE TWO
PROVIDE COORDINATION TO ENABLE CHOICE

ISSUE THREE
ENGAGE IN A SYSTEM-WIDE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROCESS

ISSUE FOUR
RESOURCE MANAGER FOR FACILITIES

ISSUE FIVE
RESOURCE MANAGER FOR TAXES AND BONDS

ISSUE SIX
RESOURCE MANAGER FOR THE FUND BALANCE RESERVE

ISSUE SEVEN
AN ABIDING PROMISE OF FAIRNESS & EQUITY FOR ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS
